The disproportionate impact of climate change worldwide echoes the global inequality brought by colonialism. The solution? Offering reparations to those who have suffered the most from climate change, Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò and Beba Cibralic write.

Today’s climate crisis foretells the global displacement of over 140 million people and rising sea levels that will put large cities underwater. Economic power, geographic location, and access to resources are already determining how well communities can respond to these and other climate-driven impacts.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀   ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Táíwò and Cibralic argue that slavery, colonialism, and imperialism forged inroads for some countries to prevail amid today’s climate impacts over others. Unless the international community reorients its approach to climate change, inequalities will only get worse.
